Zion National Park is host to some of the most scenic canyon country in the United States. Contained within its borders are high plateaus, a maze of narrow, deep, sandstone canyons, and the Virgin River and its tributaries. The Virgin River has carved its way into the desert can created a gorge so deep and narrow that sunlight rarely penetrates to the bottom. As the canyon widens, the river runs through slick-rock peaks and hanging valleys. Zion also has waterfalls supporting lush and colorful hanging gardens.
